In celebration of the journey of life, the family of Elma W. Carr announces her death on, May 2, 2013. Elma was the oldest of three children born to A.B. Whitehead, a prominent timber man in Alabama and Northwest Florida and Bess Aycock, a Native American Indian. She was known for her kindness, empathy and compassion for others. She never backed down from a challenge and it was in that spirit that she overcame many medical problems over the years. She never let a bad day get her down. And she never stopped enjoying herself and the numerous activities that she loved so much! Her faith, family and friends are what she valued most in life. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She moved to Birmingham, AL from Pensacola, FL in 2005, and she was a resident at Fairhaven Retirement Center. She was a member of Gadsden Street United Methodist Church in Pensacola, FL and an Associate member of Irondale United Methodist Church in Birmingham, AL. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Carr; a sister, Willie Giddiens and a brother Ralph Whitehead. She is survived by a daughter, Jean King Fernandez; granddaughters, Candy (Ronald) Goldbach and Kim King all of Birmingham, AL; a nephew, Vance (Cathy) Whitehead and their sons, Devin and Trey of Pensacola, FL. A Memorial Service will be held at Fairhaven Retirement Center on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 3:00pm with Rev. Jordan Gervin officiating. Visitation will be held 5-6pm Friday, May 10, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd. in Pensacola, FL. A private burial will follow in Ponce de Leon, FL.
