Evelyn Weaver Haines, 90, died September 24, 2013 following a brief illness. She was born and reared in Cumberland, MD. She graduated from Shenandoah Junior College in Dayton, VA in 1943. When her education was interrupted by World War II, she married her college sweetheart and worked for the remainder of the War in a factory to support the War effort while her husband served in the Pacific. Following the War and the birth of her only child, she returned to college at Pennsylvania State Teachers College where she earned her teaching degree. In 1952 she moved to Western Maryland and accepted her first teaching assignment in a two room schoolhouse where in one room she taught kindergarten through third grade. Over the next 30 years she taught first grade, served as principal of an elementary school and eventually served as Supervisor of Early Childhood Education in Washington County, MD. She also taught early childhood courses at Hagerstown Junior College and Hood College in Frederick, MD. She retired in 1981, moving to Pensacola to be near her son and two young grandsons. Always the educator and doting grandmother, she wrote stories and devised many educational game activities, making learning fun for both of her grandsons. She was always an active and energetic member of her church congregation. She loved her home church, St. Mark United Methodist Church. During the last five years while living at The Veranda, it was her joy to arrange the Sunday night nondenominational services there. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Jess Weaver and brother, Jack Weaver of Cumberland, MD. She is survived by her son, Dr. Norman W. Haines, Jr. (wife, Susan) of Pensacola; two grandsons, Kevin of Denver, CO and Chris (wife, Ashley) of Gulf Shores, AL; two step-granddaughters, Tina Taylor (husband, Stacy) and Amy Bender (husband, Robert); four step-great grandchildren, Will, Whitney and Avery Taylor and Harrison Bender all of Pensacola; niece, Debbie Albin of Cumberland, MD; nephew, David Weaver (wife, Nancy) of Rawlings, MD.
