Obituary

Joyce Green left us for her heavenly home on 18 November 2011. She was born in the beautiful little town of Harrison, AR, to Marvin and Julia Hathcoat. She was the youngest of their four daughters and a joy to her parents, her sisters, and everyone who knew her. She was a graduate of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After graduating she moved to Dallas, TX, where she met her future husband Dr. James L. Green, with whom she shared 51 happy, loving years. Joyce and Jim were the parents of two sons who brought them much joy. Joyce and her family had many interesting career moves. Their last and probably most satisfying was in Athens, GA, where Joyce was a founding teacher at Athens Academy and for many years taught first grade. She was so popular with students, parents, and faculty that upon retirement she was honored in a ceremony dedicating the first grade classrooms to her. Her husband was professor of economics at the Graduate School, University of Georgia and was given the title Professor Emeritus upon retirement. They then moved to Pensacola, FL where for the next 28 years Joyce delighted everyone with her sense of humor and friendly ways. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Wilna Hathcoat. Survivors include sons, Marvin Dale (Sharon) Green and Dr. James Scott (Glenda) Green; sisters, Mimi (Ken) Gulledge, and Julie States who so lovingly cared for Joyce in her last months; nieces, Tracy Gulledge and Ann States who brightened her life; a nephew, Mark (Judy) Gulledge; and two grandsons, Steven and Mark Green of whom she was so proud. No formal service will be held in Pensacola. Her ashes will be spread at her eldest son's lake home in Texas. This was her wish. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504 or your favorite charity. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
