Frank Norman Vickers, M.D., 92, of Pensacola, FL died on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
He was a native of Hattiesburg, MS. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in pre-medicine in 1952. He graduated with a medical degree from Emory University in 1956. His post-graduate medical training in internal medicine and gastroenterology was in New England Center, Boston; Tulane Service, Charity Hospital, New Orleans; and University of Louisville School of Medicine. He remained on the full-time medical faculty at the University of Louisville for three years before establishing his practice of gastroenterology in Pensacola in 1965. He was director of the Gastroenterology Laboratory at Baptist Hospital for 25 years. He enjoyed warm relationships with his medical colleagues and his patients. He retired from medical practice in 2001. He served as Book Review Editor of the Journal of the Florida Medical Association, editor of the Escambia County Medical Society Bulletin and editor of the newsletter of the Florida Society of Internal Medicine (FSIM) and Florida Chapter of the American College of Physicians. He served as president of the Florida Society of Internal Medicine in 1971. He was honored by his colleagues at FSIM with the Charles Donegan Award for outstanding medical service and humanitarianism.
He was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, a founder of "The Thursday Group" (a weekly discussion group which has been continuous since 1967), and the Jazz Society of Pensacola (JSOP).
JSOP was incorporated in 1983 and was a supporting arm of the Pensacola JazzFest which also began in 1983. Vickers served in a volunteer capacity with JSOP and, during the early years the society, ran the organization from a corner of his medical office. During this time, he was a board member of the American Federation of Jazz Societies serving as its president in 1993 and as editor of the quarterly newsletter for nine years. He served as secretary of the Pensacola Camellia Club for a number of years after retirement from medical practice. He also served six years as board member of the Pensacola Symphony during the 1990s.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Hawkins and Elizabeth Vickers of Hattiesburg, MS; his brother, Hawkins Ladson Vickers, Jr. of Pascagoula, MS; and his sister, Elizabeth Vickers Goad of Lexington, VA.
Norman is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth "Betty"; daughters, Sarah Elliott (Steve) of Blue Bell, PA and Marie Vickers of San Diego; son, Frank Norman Vickers, Jr. (Lena Maria) of Trollhattan, Sweden; as well as grandchildren, Will and Jeffrey Elliott; Emily, Chase and Lily Horne; and Lovisa and Maja Vickers.
Memorial service will be held 3:00pm Saturday, October 14, 2023, at St. Christopher's Church, 3200 N. 12th Ave., with Rev. Susan Sowers officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service.
Memorial donations may be given to the Jazz Society of Pensacola, St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.
