Flora Lee Dungan Mead, known affectionately to her family and friends as Billie, passed away April 20, 2011, at her home. She was born February 1, 1912, in Prentiss, MS, to Joe Cephus and Mary Ellen Tolbert Dungan. As a young child, she moved to Escambia County with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings, her husband, George Egbert (Bert) Mead, and their sons, Scudder Mead and Roddie Mead. In addition, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Clarissa Dungan, a brother-in-law, Jack McNabb and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is especially grateful for the love and support of Gloria Perez, Tita Burton, Andi Greenlea and the Covenant Hospice staff. She is the last surviving member of the Tate High School class of 1930. As a student, she had the lead in school musical productions and played on the basketball team. She received her teaching certificate by attending Florida State College for Women during the summers following high school graduation. She taught for three years at Davisville School before leaving for Texas to marry the love of her life, Bert Mead, on May 21, 1933. Later, the couple returned to Escambia County where Bert worked in communications and she volunteered in PTA for their children. When Bert opened his own business, Radio and Electronics Service Company, she served as secretary and treasurer. After Bert's death in 1970, she and their son, Roddie, continued to operate the business for several years before selling it. After retirement, she travelled extensively often taking one or more of her grandchildren with her. She worked tirelessly for her church, Community of Christ. She enjoyed directing the choir and singing solos. She was delighted when at the age of 80 she mastered the pedals on the organ. She taught Sunday School, directed women's ministries, and went on a mission trip to Europe including what was then East Germany. She was an accomplished seamstress. She made the robes for the children's choir and regularly sewed clothes for children who needed them. She also was involved in Outreach International, raising funds to provide for humanitarian projects in less developed areas. She made a site visit for Outreach International to the Philippines. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Outreach International at 129 Lexington, Independence, MO 64050 or Covenant Hospice, 5041 N, 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.
