Obituary

Florence Marcia Falvey, 86, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015, in Pensacola, FL. She was the daughter of the late Harold A. and Evelyn G. Drake, of Poplar Ridge, NY. Born in Sherwood, NY on June 2, 1928, Marcia attended Emily Howland Central School in Sherwood, graduating high school in 1945. Starting nursing training at the Auburn City Hospital School of Nursing in 1946, she spent 3 years working in the labor and delivery room and 1 year as a private nurse, with summers spent in Long Island as a camp nurse. Upon graduation her 1949 yearbook, the Caduceus, said of Marcia: "There is one dream girl in every class." She was qualified to practice as a professional Registered Nurse (RN) in New York, Nebraska, Virginia, and Indiana. Marcia married the late Colonel Joseph L. Falvey, USAF, of Auburn, NY, on February 22, 1952 and spent the next 23 years stationed at a variety of Air Force bases across the country, raising 8 children. In 1965 she resumed her nursing career while living in Nebraska, where her specialty became geriatric care. When her husband retired in 1975 as Professor of Aerospace Science at the University of Notre Dame she became a nursing supervisor at Healthwin in South Bend, IN. Though she tried to retire from nursing in November of 1993, she was talked into returning to Healthwin in February 1994, finally retiring from nursing in November 1995 so that she could begin traveling around the country to visit children and grandchildren. A particular journey she always loved was to Florida, to visit her sister, the late Patricia Bradigan. In January 2010, Marcia moved to Pensacola with her oldest son and daughter-in-law, and continued to enjoy traveling and her other favorite past-timescrossword puzzles, dining out, crocheting, reading, and swimming. Since May 1, 2014 she was under the outstanding care of Pacifica Senior Village Creekside in Pensacola, and more recently Covenant Hospice. She passed away peacefully on January 8 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her brothers, Raymond, Don, and Harold and her sister Pat. She is survived by four sons and four daughters, David Falvey (Jody) of Pensacola, FL, Daniel Falvey (Pat) of North Las Vegas, NV, Patricia Taylor of Milford, CT, Margaret Surdam (Dan) of Skaneateles, NY, Joseph Falvey (Annie) of Plymouth, MI, Mary Stephenson (Frank) of Mishawaka, IN, John Falvey (Deb) of Granger, IN, and Amanda Conmy (John) of Yardley, PA; 20 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial and burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date. It is requested that donations in honor of Marcia be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011, or at www.alz.org.
