Obituary

Florence Pokrant, a native of Pensacola, passed away on August 18, 2024.

Born on July 20, 1940, in Pensacola, FL, the youngest daughter of Awald Emil Pokrant and Phoebe Maude Roberts Pokrant.

In 1969, she married Spencer Thomas "Tom" West, a Navy submariner. While the marriage did not last, Florence often spoke fondly of her ex-husband, the "former Mr. West," and told lively tales of their travels to Spain and Scotland where he was stationed. Florence graduated from Northeast Broadcasting School in Boston, Massachusetts and worked locally in Pensacola radio. She held a Bachelor of Arts in English from The University of West Florida and freelanced as an editor to numerous UWF theses students.

Florence had a way with words and rarely met a stranger. She was also known for her love of cats. She took in numerous strays and was an advocate of spay and neutering.

She is preceded by her parents, her brother Awald Edward Pokrant, her sisters Carol Ann Bosserman and Elaine Pokrant.

Florence is survived by her sister, Vivian Oberhaus of Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bayside for all of their care given to Florence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Escambia County Animal Shelter, 200 W. Fairfield Drive, Pensacola, FL 32501.
