Obituary

Frances Amelia Maimone Podojil, 90, died at the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Inpatient Residence in Pensacola, FL on Monday, December 29, 2014. A Memorial Mass is planned for her at 11:00am Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 100 Daniel Street, Gulf Breeze, FL. The Mass will be preceded by the Rosary which will begin at 10:30am. Frances was born November 1, 1924 in Ravenna, Ohio to Annita M. Bruno and Salvatore Sam Maimone both of Sicily. Frances lost her father to an accident at an early age and was raised by her mother and step father James Larcus. She had two older sisters, Rosa and Marie and a younger half-brother Philip. Frances was a graduate of Ravenna High School in Ravenna, Ohio. Frances married James William Podojil on May 13, 1944. Frances traveled with Jim as he was stationed in the Navy at Corpus Christi, Texas. In March 1945 Jim was assigned to FAW 9-2, Casu 28, and Frances and the baby lived alone in Groton CT until Jim was discharged in October 1945. They returned to Ohio to establish their home where Jim worked for Lamb Electric in Kent, Ohio and Frances was a homemaker. In the 1960's Jim changed employment to Goodyear Tires as a process engineer until retirement. Together they raised 12 children; 5 daughters: MaryAnn Crowley, Patricia Coffman, Judith Cuckler, Jean MacDonald, and Frances Katherine Pitzer; and 7 sons: John, James, Gerald, Joseph, Jeffrey, Gregory, and Robert. Frances was a devoted wife and mother raising their children and working the farm on which they lived. She loved spending time with her family and hearing and seeing the activities of her 26 grandchildren and more than 37 great-grandchildren. When introduced to friends of her grandchildren she would tell them to call her Grandma. She spent her life caring for others whether it was neighborhood children, her own children, grandchildren or aging parents. She was a loving person who opened her heart and home to many. She could be found in her kitchen cooking, canning, and freezing the food the family grew in their garden. It was common to arrive at the house on Sunday afternoon and find a feast that she had prepared for her family and any family or friends who may stop by. Christmas was her favorite holiday. She would make many desserts including nut roll, pizzelli, and cannoli and looked forward to having her family together. She was a devout Catholic practicing her faith at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ravenna, Ohio and later at St Ann's in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Jim and Frances moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1995 to enjoy retirement in the warmer climate. She enjoyed sitting in the sun and watching the birds and butterflies and tending to her flower garden. Frances and Jim celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past June among many family and friends at St Ann's Parrish in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Frances is survived by her husband James, her step-brother Philip, 11 of her 12 children, sons and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Frances joins her parents Sam Maimone, Annita (Anna) and James Larcus, sisters Rosa (Rose Schiavone) and Marie (Mary Diezman), and her youngest son Robert in heaven. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations in Frances Podojil's name to St. Ann's Catholic Church or to your favorite charity.
