Obituary

Frieda Markert, 96, of Pensacola died January 28, 2017 at Joyce Goldenberg Inpatient Hospice Residence.

Frieda was the daughter of Rose (Bombal) and William John Markert. She enjoyed a long career at South Baptist Hospital in Pensacola as a Nurse Anesthetist, working alongside her best friend, Helen Mieras, who predeceased her.

Frieda graduated from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida. Although a resident of Brandon, that high school did not have the courses she needed to prepare for nursing school. She hired in with a Tampa family in exchange for room and board so she could attend a more comprehensive high school. She went on to graduate from the Lutheran School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO and ultimately earned a degree in her specialty.

Frieda was the last Founding Member of Grace Lutheran Church of Pensacola. A dedicated reader until the end, Frieda was recognized for her work with the Northwest Florida Literacy Council, volunteering more than 30 hours a month teaching others to read.

Frieda travelled extensively, visiting Russia, Cuba in the pre-Castro days and friends and relatives around the U.S.

Frieda loved cats. Her beloved Maggie lived to be 20. She is survived by two rescue cats, Ginger and Mistie who provided entertainment and company until the end.

Frieda had a green thumb and her yard reflected it with camellias, orchids, shrimp plants and hibiscus; something always in bloom.

Frieda never married, choosing instead to take care of her mother, a centenarian. She is survived by a nephew, Michael (Leah) Markert of Boca Raton, Florida; a step-niece, Paula (Richard) Livermore of Colon, Michigan; two great-nephews, Jonathan and Christopher Markert of Boca Raton, Florida; special friends Laura Jefferson and Larry Halvorson and her church family at Grace Lutheran.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter J. Markert and her dear friend, Helen Mieras.

Frieda has chosen to be cremated. A memorial service will take place Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Grace Lutheran Church, 6601 North 9th Avenue in Pensacola, Pastor Phil Pfiffer officiating. Visitation is at 10 a.m. with the service at 11, and a luncheon at 1.
