Obituary

George Brun, 82, of Pensacola, FL passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024.

Born on March 25, 1942, in Merrick, NY to Charles and Frances Brun, George was raised on Long Island, NY near beautiful Atlantic beaches. He earned a HBA in Science/Psychology from SUNY Binghamton (Harpur College) and graduate/management courses in management systems. George worked in the New York State Education Department coordinating budgets as well as the planning and movement of the New York State Library, Museum, and Archives to a new one million square foot building opposite the State Capitol in Albany. He later supervised the Division of Higher Ed Finance and represented the Commissioner on a major state bonding agency. In between those assignments, George worked at the State Budget Office for 14 years managing teams responsible for Social Services, State Education Department and public university budgets. After leaving State service he consulted on education policy and finance.

George's volunteer efforts included serving on a town historic preservation committee, regional open space preservation organization (treasurer and president), library renovation planning and fund raising, and county animal shelter fund raising and maintenance. He also volunteered for several years at the Manna Food Pantry.

In 2004, George and his wife Sandy moved to Pensacola, FL where they were welcomed by Hurricane Ivan. They overcame that setback and lived in River Gardens until June 2016, when they moved to Azalea Trace Retirement Community. George and Sandy jumped right in and became active in different facets at Azalea Trace. In 2017, George led the team that administered the Resident Council election. In 2018, He was a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. In 2019, he chaired the Culinary Committee and the Landscape and Grounds Committee.

George's special interests included social and competitive dancing as well as hunter class horseback competitions.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Roberts; sons, David Brun and Christopher Brun; granddaughters, Victoria and April Brun; sister, Carol Barteld; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Memorial Service will be held 10:00am Friday, October 4, 2024, at Azalea Trace Auditorium, with Deacon Richard Lurton and Chaplain Jim Stickle officiating. Private family interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Pensacola, FL.
