George Washington Lafayette Carr, MD, FACS, 94, of Pensacola, FL passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018.

He was born in Ft. Deposit, AL, in 1924, the youngest of four children to the late Josiah Mark and Eula Mae Brawner Carr. Like many of his generation, he served in WWII. After returning from the war, he attended Duke University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in December of 1948. He then attended George Washington Medical School graduating as a physician in 1952. Dr. Carr then completed his internship at Henry Ford Hospital in 1953 and his surgical residence at the Veteran's Hospital in Atlanta, GA in 1957. He settled in Pensacola, FL where he practiced general and thoracic surgery from 1957 until 2000. Dr. Carr was a Founding Fellow of the Pensacola Surgical Society and the Chief of the Surgical Residency Program from 1970 until 1980. Shortly after retiring, Dr. Carr moved to Azalea Trace where found many friends including his closest companion, Lovie Meriwether.

Dr. Carr is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Josiah Mark Carr, Westmoreland Brawner Carr, and Leonora Carr Rainer.

He is survived by his children, George (Lilly) Carr of Los Angeles, CA, Paul (Monique) Carr of Pensacola, FL, and Caroline Carr of Bozeman, MT; grandchildren, Devin Carr and Brooke Carr.

Visitation will be held 9:30am until the Funeral Service at 10:30am Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32504. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.

The family extends special thanks to the care staff at Azalea Trace, Sacred Heart Hospital and Covenant Care Hospice.
