George Michael “Mike” McCracken, 76, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in his home with his best friend, Tony Boling, at his side.
Mike was born in Norfolk, VA on April 12, 1950, to Alfred and June McCracken. He spent his younger years growing up in Norfolk where he became an accomplished musician specializing in piano and the pipe organ. His graduation from Norview High School in 1968 led to a two-year attendance at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ before deciding to change his major from music to accounting. Mike earned his Accounting Degree from Old Dominion University in 1973 and began his nearly 40-year career as an accountant and computer programmer in Federal Civil Service. His assignments started in Norfolk, continued in Washington D.C. with a final transfer to Pensacola where he retired.
Although Mike decided to pursue accounting, his talent as an organist was, and is undeniable. For more than 20 years he played for services at many churches in Pensacola, including many years at the Naval Air Station Chapel, and most recently as the music director for The Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel. For his family, friends, and members of the many congregations who heard him play - he wasn’t just talented, he was spectacular (and everyone who knew him is aware of how uncomfortable that statement would have made him feel). Mike’s generous spirit, and his love and caring for his friends and family (both church and relational) will live on in our hearts.
Mike is survived by his brother, Pat McCracken; his cousin, Don Yontz; his nephews, Alan McCracken and Robert McCracken; as well as his best friend, Tony Boling.
Per Mike's wishes, there will be no formal services at this time.
