Obituary

George Rollin Oscarson, 89 years young, passed away on Oct. 24, 2014 after a short battle with cancer, in Pensacola, FL. He was born in Duluth, MN to Herman and Alice Oscarson on Mar. 21, 1925. He spent two tours in the US Navy; Feb. 15, 1943 through Mar. 23, 1946 and Nov. 18, 1948 through Feb. 1, 1950. During his first tour, he survived the sinking U.S.S. Bismark Sea (CVE-95 & VC-86) off of Iwo Jima on Feb. 21, 1945 by a Japanese Kamikaze attack. This battle was a major victory for the Allies in WWII. The motto of the USS Bismark Sea was: "When this is all over, we want what we are fighting forFREEDOM!" On Feb. 21, 1995 (50 years later), the original painting of the USS Bismark Sea (CVE-95/VC-86) was donated to the Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, TX by the CVE-95/VC-86 Survivors Association. After getting out of the service, he moved to Ft. Walton Beach, FL in 1950. He worked in Civil Service at Eglin AFB for 33 years. While working at Eglin, he also had his own painting and handyman business. He is preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Hans Underset, Sr. and step-brother, Hans Underset Jr., brother, Kenneth Oscarson; and one great grandson, Keith David Lockart. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ricki Oscarson of Pensacola, FL; daughters, Sandee Lewick Ward (husband, Bill) of Navarre, FL, Sherri Bigot of Valparaiso, FL; and two step-children, Suzan Strack (husband, Tom) of Wisconsin and John Anderson of California whom he raised from a young age; also a brother, Ricky Oscarson; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held 10:30am, Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in his name, may be made to the Emerald Coast Hospice, 1555 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501 or the American Cancer Society.
