Obituary

George "Harry" Stopp, Jr., 81, of Pensacola, FL passed away Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Harry was born June 19, 1944, in Jacksonville, FL to Mildred Frances Clyott and George H. Stopp. To see Harry interact with a dog was to know his gentle spirit.

He graduated from Statesboro High School and earned B.A. and master's degrees in Anthropology and Archaeology from the University of Alabama. He served in the US Navy in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC during the Vietnam War.

He later earned a Ph.D. at LSU and went on to a career as a college professor and administrator, joining UWF in 1987 until 1997 at which time he attended FSU Law School. He went on to serve as a prosecutor and later a criminal defense attorney.

Harry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Thomas Stopp; his daughter, Victoria Frances Stopp and her wife, Rhonda Cooper; his sister, Elaine Stopp Mullins and his niece, Misha Whitman along with her husband Josh and their sons, Grayson and Connor. Harry also cherished everyone in Margaret's family, who deeply returned the love.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, Jewell Mae and Cecil Harrison Clyott, Jr. as well as Millie Dreyer and George J. Stopp. His uncle, Cecil Harrison "Harry" Clyott, Jr. remains missing in action since the Korean Conflict.

Visitation will be held 4:30pm-6:30pm Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Baptist Health Care Foundation (www.baptisthealthcarefoundation.org) or a charity of your choice.

Harry loved his family, his HH friends, and the beauty of nature as well as the dogs who brought him joy, including his grand dog Smitty. We remain forever grateful to the care and support from Baptist, The Blake, Emerald Coast Hospice, and the Home Instead care givers.  His soul lives on in the flap of birds' wings, the blooms of spring flowers, and the hilarious nicknames given to every dog he ever met.
