Born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 13, 1926, Georgia Christine Johnson Butterbaugh claimed Pensacola as home, although for the last 5 years of her life she had returned to Alabama, making her home with her Montgomery family and becoming quite a fan of Alabama football. It was here she died on October 14, 2013 after a prolonged bout of pneumonia. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Pensacola and the Daughters of the Nile. "Courage is the power to let go of the familiar and move into the unknown." This note Christine had written and tucked into her Bible is an apt description of her character. Giving her heart to a career Navy man led her into many new places and challenges over their 64 years of marriage; graduating Valedictorian from Pensacola High School she was always an avid learner and moved into the strange new world of computers and the internet with great curiosity; she returned to the workforce later in life, completing a 20 year career in the Admitting Office at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola when most of her peers were enjoying retirement. And throughout her life she struggled with chronic lung disease. Yet perhaps her greatest courage came as she began a new life on her own after the death of her beloved husband, John in 2007. Leaving a wonderful legacy of family who have known her love and loved her dearly, Christine is survived by her children The Rev. Peggy Buelow (Peter) of Carrollton, VA; John Butterbaugh (Stella) of Concord, NC; George Butterbaugh of Montgomery, AL; and Timothy Butterbaugh (The Rev. Marie Butterbaugh) of Pensacola; grandchildren CDR Christopher Hayes, USN (Julie) of Chesapeake, VA; LT Christian Butterbaugh, MPD (Kim) of Montgomery, AL; Allison Hayes (Dom Laporte) of Wolcott, VT; LCDR Ryan Hayes USN of San Diego, CA; Christy Darwin of Montgomery, AL; Sherrie Butterbaugh of Columbia, SC; Erica Enns (Jonathan) of Holly Springs, NC; MSGT Jonathan Butterbaugh, USAF of Montgomery; Jenny Bailey (Steve) of Huntersville, NC; Nicholas Butterbaugh of Harrison, VA & Haley Butterbaugh of Montgomery; great grandchildren Jack, Kyle & Liam Hayes of Chesapeake, VA; Catherine Hayes of Wolcott, VT; Isaac Hayes of San Diego; Kira Butterbaugh, Tyler Woodfin, Ethan & Grant Darwin all of Montgomery; Scarlett Enns of Holly Springs, NC; and Stella & Adam Bailey of Huntersville, NC; her beloved sister Helen Smith of Pensacola and brother Bill Johnson (Beverly) of Big Springs, TX; and many dear nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held 11:30am until the Celebration of Christine's life at 12:30pm Friday, October 18, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel followed by a 2:00pm internment at Barrancas National Cemetery, with the Rev.
