IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Georgina Patricia
Slater
August 23, 1929 – February 3, 2023
Georgina P. Slater, age 93, of St. Cloud, FL passed away on February 3, 2023.
Georgina was born to the late William and Elizabeth Palmano Sullivan on August 23, 1929 in London England 93 years ago and survived the terrible WWII bombings of that city. She took a chance on America and immigrated when she was 18 with $50 in her pocket and the promise of a job in Texas. She chased down a young US sailor who she had met during the war and married him, and raised three children: Elizabeth, Richard, and Charlie. Georgina received her Masters in Social Work from the University of West Florida in 1977. She worked for many years for Pensacola Junior College, and then with the State of Florida as a social worker in the Milton area. She was profoundly dedicated to her clients' welfare. Georgina was the happy bride of Joseph Slater for over 70 years. In addition to loving her husband and kids, she had an insatiable thirst for travel, and not just to western Europe, she traveled alone to Tehran, Kabul, through Syria, and many other countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. She spent her 92nd birthday in a small town in Iceland and also traveled to Lake Baikal in Russia when she was 86, for reasons that escaped us all. She traveled upcountry to OK National Park in Sierra Leone during the Blood Diamond days in 1994, and when confronted by a drunk child soldier with an AK47 pointed at her group, calmly and inquisitively asked "Does that happen very often here?" Tramp steamers and cheap seats were her preferred mode of transport. Georgie lived large. Quiet and inquisitive, she searched the world for experience.
She is survived by her sons, Richard (Diane) and Charlie (Lizzie); and her three grandsons, Joe (Sarah), Michael (Madeline), and Forbes. Her husband Joe sadly passed away four years ago, and she will be placed at his side in perpetuity at Barrancas National Cemetery 11:00am on Monday, February 13, 2023. A Funeral Cortege will depart Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 10:30am for Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, we ask you to either travel someplace far away and learn something you don't know now, and if you are unable, then donate to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 SE Indian St., Stuart, FL 34997. Hospice provided care and comfort to mom and to her family, making her comfortable and rested. Special thanks go to the wonderful people that make up Solaris Senior Living in Stuart, FL, mom's home. Mom could not have been better cared for.
