Obituary

Gerburg "Geri" H. Sears, 70, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. She was born on June 16,1944 in Hoxter, Germany to the late Dr. Karl-Werner and Magdalene Schupmann, both of whom she loved and admired very much. She graduated from the Luisenschule in Bad Hersfeld in 1963. As a young woman she was the belle of the ball and the doorbell at the Schupmann's house never stopped ringing. Her siblings remember her as full of joie de vivre with an infectious smile and sense of humor. Very intelligent, she always excelled in her studies and went on to earn an Interpreting degree in 1967. Languages were a lifelong passion of hers; she worked for big companies such as Honeywell and ZDF as an interpreter. In 1971 she moved to the U.S. and married Hayden "Denny" Sears. Over the next 15 years, while he was in the Air Force they were stationed in Florida, California, England, Germany and North Carolina. In 1977, while in England, their long-awaited only child, Correne was born. Retired from the Air Force, they moved to Pensacola and opened Fantastic Sam's (N. Davis Hwy). Geri then started teaching English as a second language and German at PJC. Many lifelong and cherished friends were made along the way. In November 2006 her granddaughter, Mia, the light of her life, was born. That same month she was extremely proud to become a naturalized citizen of the U.S. Very patriotic, she was an active member of the Pensacola Tea Party. She continued to share her knowledge and love of the German language until after she was diagnosed with Leukemia in October 2013. She had an extremely strong will to live and said, "I will fight!" until her dying day. Geri never met a stranger and will be remembered as loving and always willing to lend a helping hand, no matter what the situation. She is survived by her husband, Hayden F. Sears, Lt Col USAF(ret); daughter, Correne; granddaughter, Maria Weaver; beloved siblings; Dorothea (Dr.Klaus) Hubrich, Karl-Werner, Capt. DE Navy(ret.) and Ursula Schupmann, Dr.Alhard (Gerhild) Schupmann, Dr.Michael (Ingrid) Schupmann and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Graveside services will be held at 11am Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Barrancas National Cemetery.
