Obituary

Gladys Colley Smith passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Hospice House Woodside in Pinellas Park with her family at her side. Gladys was born in Pensacola on October 31, 1929 to parents Charles P. and Gladys Arabella Creighton Colley, Sr. She had three brothers; Charles P. Jr., Jack and William Thomas Colley; and two sisters Sallie Belle Stoltenberg and Mary Arabella Jones; 11 nieces and nephews; and too many cousins to count. She graduated from Tate High School in 1947 and from Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. Initially she worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and then went on to be the first night supervisor at Baptist Hospital when it opened. Gladys married William B. Smith in 1956 and they had three daughters. She moved to Kenneth City, FL in 1961. Throughout her life and career, Gladys touched the lives of many with her compassionate care, beautiful smile, gentle touch, acts of kindness and generosity and her dedication to her family and to all of the families in her care. She was a member of Northwest Presbyterian Church. Her daughter, Brenda Smith; her parents, her brothers and sisters and their spouses, and two nieces and one nephew predeceased her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, William B. Smith; and two loving daughters, Wanda Smith of St. Petersburg, Susan Smith of Pensacola, her grand-dog Cocoa; too many grand-cats to name; her cousin Nancy Davis Ginavan; and nine nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 10:00 AM until service time at 12:00 PM at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 2276 Airport Boulevard with Dr. Charles Randle officiating. Interment will be at Bayview Memorial Park Pensacola, FL. The family requests memorials to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
