Obituary

Lieutenant Commander Grey R. Jewett, Jr., USN (ret.), passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by family after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Grey was a resident of Pensacola, FL since 1968.

He is preceded in death by his parents and namesake, Grey R. Jewett, Sr. and Margaret Jewett; his first wife, Linda Corn; sisters, Ariel Birkhoff and Ruthe Small; and step-son, Tre Chipman.

He is survived by his wife, Ann S. Jewett; daughters, Lisa O'Neal (Barry) and Kristen Reeves; and son, Philip G. Jewett; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Grey was born in Oak Park, IL. He graduated from Lincoln High School, Lincoln, NE; Cornell College, Mount Vernon, IA; and obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Nova University. He was a fraternity member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He commissioned in the US Navy in the Naval Supply Corps and served onboard the USS Portage and the USS Platte.  He served ashore at NAVCOMSTA, Stockton, CA; Naval Station Adak, Alaska and Naval Air Station Pensacola. Later he was a private business owner as well as serving as Administrator for the Escambia County Community Mental Health Center. He also served as Risk Manager for the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners, and retired from the US Navy Reserves and the State of Florida. Grey was originally a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Pensacola, FL and later became a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church also in Pensacola, FL. He was named "The Sage" by the Holy Cross Choir of which he was a treasured member and by whom he will be greatly missed. Grey and his wife, Ann also volunteered at West Florida Hospital.

Grey's hobbies included 17+ years of traveling North America by motor home with Ann and their two cats, craft beer, ice cream, peanut butter and working in his woodshop and sailing (who knew running aground on the sandbar outside of NAS Pensacola Yacht Club in a twin keel could be so much fun).

Grey will be greatly missed by anyone who had the privilege to meet him. He was a man of God and lived his life to the fullest possible extent.
