Obituary

Harry Edward "Bo" Flanders, of Pensacola, Florida passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021, at the age of 80. After a long struggle with Alzheimer's and complications due to COVID-19, Bo died peacefully with his wife of 54 years, Sue Flanders, and their children by his side.

Bo was born in Swainsboro, Georgia on August 11, 1940, to Harry Edward Flanders, Sr. and Julia Hunnicutt Flanders. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering.  After graduating, Bo moved to Newport News, Virginia where he met Dianna Sue Ayers and they married in 1966.

During his career, he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Burlington Industries Research Center, Westinghouse Nuclear Components Division, and the Westinghouse Savannah River Site.  He was considered an expert in the fields of structural mechanics and seismic analysis with years of experience in kinematics, dynamics, vibratory and stress analysis.  He holds several patents with his work in these fields.  He was an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Bo will be remembered by family and friends for his kind heart, friendly smile, and Christian spirit.  He was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and especially enjoyed the men's bible study group.  He was a passionate woodworker and member of both the American Association of Woodturners and the Artistic Woodturners of Northwest Florida.  As much as he enjoyed woodturning, he received even greater pleasure from sharing his creations with hundreds of friends and family across the country.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and will be forever in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James Flanders.  He is survived by his wife, Sue Flanders; daughter, Cindi Bear and husband David Bear, of Pensacola; son, Ned Flanders and wife Hoa Flanders of Arizona; grandchildren Julia Bear, Max Bear, Teah Flanders, and Amelie Flanders; sister, Harriett Hickman and husband Jay Hickman, of Culpeper, Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Canopy on Berryhill and Emerald Coast Hospice for their devoted care.  Their love and compassion provided comfort to our entire family.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private service will be held for the immediate family at Trinity Presbyterian Church in the Memorial Garden.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden, or a charity of your choice.
