Harry Sheppard McKeown, 91, died in Milton, FL on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
Harry was born in Gainesville, FL in 1931, the son of Frances Louise Sheppard McKeown and Col. Charles William McKeown (US Army). Through his mother's family, he was a direct descendant of Don Manuel Gonzalez and Marie Louise Bonifay of Pensacola, FL, and of John Polk Campbell of Springfield, MO. Through his father's family, he was a descendant of Arthur McKeown of County Antrim, Ireland.
Harry attended high school at St. Vincent de Paul School in Newport News, VA, where he met his future wife, Neil Terry. Harry and Neil were wedded on July 19, 1950. Together they had 10 children. Their 67-year marriage was spent in Newport News, VA; Pensacola, FL; Panama City, FL; and back to Pensacola in 1996.
A loving father and a devout Catholic, Harry cared for his family as a route salesman and warehouse manager at beer distributors in Pensacola and Panama City, and when semi-retired he worked for Trailways/Greyhound Lines. He enjoyed sports (especially minor-league baseball), western movies, and most of all he loved to travel.
Harry is preceded in death by his wife, Neil; by his son, Harry S. McKeown, Jr.; and by his daughter, Julia Bates.
He is survived by his sons and daughters, Dan McKeown (Liz), Maggie McKeown (Charlie), Genevieve McKeown (Susan), Charles McKeown, Terry McKeown (Luke), Jonathan McKeown (Sarah), William McKeown (Kim), and Amy Mauldin (Chad) along with 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 9:30am until a Funeral Mass to begin at 10:00am Monday, October 16, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Milton, FL, with Msgr. Michael Reed celebrant. Following the Funeral Mass, internment will take place at 2:30pm in Panama City, FL at The Catholic Cemetery on Frankford Ave. and 14th St.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Covenant Care Hospice of Pensacola, FL.
