IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harry V.
Smith
April 8, 1929 – April 4, 2018
Harry V. Smith, 88, of Pensacola, FL, who passed away on April 4, 2018, was born in Palo Alto, CA on April 8, 1929 to parents Jules E. Smith and Elsa O. (Rachel-Layritz) Smith.
Harry enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1947, and served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. His assignments included aircraft quality control of radar, communication, and navigation systems for the F-101B and F-102. He retired in 1969 as a MSGT, USAF, completing 22 years of honorable service.
After retiring from the military, Harry earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Accounting from University of Great Falls, Montana. Harry pursued a new career in accounting and financial management working in the private sector, and held various US Civil Service positions with the US Army, State Department, US Air Force, and Defense Finance and Accounting Service. He retired from Civil Service in 1993.
During his lifetime, Harry lived in 4 foreign countries (Japan, Korea, Germany, and Iceland), and 14 states. Throughout his life one thing was constant; his trust and faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Wherever he lived Harry was an active member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Church, once serving as a delegate to the LCMS national convention in 1975.
During his retirement in Pensacola, you would most likely find him surrounded by friends at Mojo's Coffee Shop, enjoying lunch at Norma's Restaurant, giving visiting friends and family guided tours of the area, and always enjoying an air show.
He was a true patriot, an avid reader of history, and never hesitant to debate political views. Having been born and raised in the San Francisco area, he was a lifetime 49ers fan. He enjoyed running, participating in numerous races and marathons. More than anything, he loved and cherished his family, and so many friends.
Harry is survived by his loving wife, Sally A. (Weatherhead) Smith of 33 years; his daughter, Carol A. Smith of Wilkesboro, NC; his son, Harry M. Smith of Boise, ID; and a grandson, Montana H. Smith of Denver, CO.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Janet L. Bicsak; sister, Elsa (Layritz) Harris; brothers, Clement Layritz and Frederick Price; and the mother of his three children, B. Sue (Staley) Smith.
