Obituary

Hedy Frances (Pellich) Jenko, 90, of Pensacola, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2015 at her home at Carpenter's Creek Assisted Living Facility. Born September 18, 1924 in New York, NY, she was the youngest of three children born to Louis and Helen (Povs) Pellich. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Hedwig Justine; her brother, Louis; her husband, John F. Jenko; and her son, Dr. Paul Gregory Jenko. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Jenko Clements and son-in-law Dr. J. Sidney Clements, Jr.; grandchildren, Jessica Clements Andrade (Alex), Jimmy Clements and Jenny Clements; and daughter-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Jenko; grandchildren, Kevin Jenko, Keith Jenko and Kyle Jenko. Born of Slovenian parents (formerly Yugoslavia), Hedy spent many years as a young woman dancing with various costumed Slovenian dance groups as entertainment in church halls around New York City and Brooklyn. She assisted in the WWII effort at home when she volunteered as a Nurse's Aide in local hospitals. Hedy graduated at the top of her class from Grover Cleveland High School in 1943. However, she gave up the Valedictorian designation so that the scholarship money could benefit a college-bound classmate, and gave the Salutatorian speech instead. Hedy's dream was to become a secretary, and upon graduation at age 18, landed the job as Secretary to the Manager of Purchases of the Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company in the Chanin Building, New York, NY, where she stayed for 10 years until her son, Paul, was about to be born. Hedy married Slovenian immigrant Janez (John) Jenko on June 30, 1951. Hedy moved with her husband and children from New York to Baltimore to Atlanta as he was transferred with American Oil Company. When John retired, they moved to Pensacola where Hedy and John were active with St. Paul's Catholic Church Golden Agers and the PJC Seniors Club. John passed away February 1, 2011 just prior to their 60th wedding anniversary. Visitation will be held 11:00am until the Funeral Mass to begin at 12:00noon Saturday, February 7, 2015 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Hyde Park Rd., with Fr. Kevin McQuone celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Pall bearers will be two of her grandsons, Kevin Jenko and Jimmy Clements. Special thanks are given by the family to the entire staff of Carpenter's Creek for their care and compassion for Hedy, who was a resident and member of the "family" for 7 years. Appreciation also goes out to the staff of Emerald Coast Hospice, who assisted in so many invaluable ways in Hedy's final days, and also to those friends who offered prayers and comfort to the family. "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers [sisters] of mine, you did for me"-Matt 25:40 The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Emerald Coast Hospice or to St. Paul's Catholic Church.
