Obituary

Helen was born on June 12, 1924 and passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2009. She was a lifelong resident of Pensacola, FL and a member of Gadsden St. United Methodist Church. As an independent woman ahead of her time, Helen had a 30 year career with the State of Florida as manager of the Florida Welcome Center. She traveled extensively while balancing her priorities as a wife and mother, and was well known for her love of cooking, especially for family gatherings. Preceding her in death are her husband, John W. Cary and mother, Agnes E. Hogan. Survivors include: daughter, Paige Cary (Richard Godwin); sisters, Joan E. Hobson, Angelina Jones and Helena Pelous; beloved nieces and nephew, Linda H. Ward (Carl), Jacquelyn Johnson, Clyde Johnson (Rachel); and great-niece, Maci Kate Johnson. There were many other special people in Helens life including her cousins, Dorothy Capps, Charles Porras, Johnny Porras; life-long friend, Kitty Stone and her adopted family Gail, Dick, Joanna, and Katie Garnas. Special thanks go to Dr. John Retzloff; and to Sylvia and Toni with Covenant Hospice who helped give my mom a much better quality of life in her final months. Also, heartfelt thanks go to Nancy and Courtney who came in as caregivers and left as family. A celebration of Helens life will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Gadsden Street United Methodist Church, 901 E. Gadsden St., Pensacola, FL with visitation from 12:00pm-1:00pm and service to begin at 1:00pm with Rev. John Baxter officiating. Interment will follow at St. Johns Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
