Helen Carroll Pugh passed away peacefully on June 14, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Born March 9, 1931 in Atlanta Georgia to Zimmie and John Carroll, Helen graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, AL in 1948. She lived in Auburn, AL and Fairhope, AL before moving to Pensacola in 1962.
Helen's unconditional love for her children manifested in every facet of her fabulous life. Her beautiful, bright smile and sunny disposition made her a joy to be around and all who knew her will miss her loving spirit.
Known for her beautiful soprano singing voice, Helen loved participating in church choirs and local musical theater. She was a member of Pensacola's Gadsden Street United Methodist Church, Largo's St. Paul Methodist Church, and Alachua's First United Methodist Church. While in Clearwater, she was proud to become a Stephen Minister providing one-on-one Christian care to other congregational members during tough times.
In her early 40's she developed a love for the game of tennis, became a charter member of the Pensacola Racquet Club, and played in many leagues and tournaments. After raising her family, she followed her love of tennis, moved to the Tops'l Resort in Destin, and played her way to a national ranking in her age group. She continued playing tennis in leagues and tournaments until she was well into her 80's.
Helen retired from AmSouth Bank as a vice president in the commercial loan division and subsequently established an impressive acting and modeling career. She was featured in many advertisements as a model in print and on television and acted in independent films. In one of her favorite achievements, she portrayed former First Lady Barbara Bush in the HBO film "Recount".
Preceding her in death were her parents, Zimmie and John Carroll and her brother John "Johnny" Carroll, Jr. She is survived by her children, Nancy (Allan) Bissinger, Kathy (James) Basham, John (Christina) Pugh, Liz (Buddy) Gomez, 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren,
her sister Betty (Bill) Boykin, and additional extended family members including her sweet little dog, Oreo, her loyal companion in the final years of her life.
The celebration of Helen's life will be held June 16, 2018 at Gadsden Street United Methodist Church, visitation is at 10:30am with a Service to follow at 11:30am.
