Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel Howard "Soupy" Campbell, USAF (Ret.), of Gulf Breeze died on March 17, 2018 of a sudden heart condition.

Col. Campbell was born on Sept. 8, 1934 in Ft. Pierce, FL and lived in the Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach area for over 40 years. His military service included Service Tactical organizations with his last assignment at Eglin Air Force Base from 1971-1980. He was a distinguished B-66 pilot and then flew the F-4 fighter plane. Combat decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, 10 Air Medals and the Meritorious Service Medal. In 1967, Howard flew more than 100 combat missions over North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. His aviation career continued in retirement at the Northrup Corporation where he was division manager and pilot in Pensacola from 1980 through 1991 with over 10,000 flying hours. Under his leadership, Northrup employees provided instructor pilot and maintenance services in support of the Undergraduate Naval Flight Officer Training Program. He was a graduate of William-Carey College. In civilian life, he was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, The Air Force Association, Order of the Elks, Order of Daedalians, and Sea Gull Flight. He was proud to have been an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Howard was an aviator above all and a gregarious friend to everyone he met, in the military, in his neighborhoods of Gulf Breeze and Roan Mountain, TN (his summer home); his work-out group and his church. He loved to be of service to others, whether it was volunteering at The Saenger Theater or helping anyone with financial and organizational needs.
