Howard E. Rein, Jr., 98, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019.
He was born on July 14, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA to Howard and Marietta Rein. Howard went to Upper Darby High School (west of Philadelphia), and attended Penn State College, majoring in Forestry. He worked for Western Electric Co., Installation Dept. and was ultimately promoted to training all new employees in the basics of wiring and setting up central office equipment in telephone exchanges.
He entered the US Navy in 1941 as aviation cadet at "E" base in Philadelphia Navy Yard. Howard went to Jacksonville as a cadet and was the regimental cadet commander of all aviation cadets. Then he was commissioned and sent to the South Pacific. He flew SBD's from Espirito Santo to Guadalcanal. He then returned to the states in 1943 to the Naval Hospital, then to Pensacola, FL for training duty. Howard married in Pensacola to Joyce Pohlmann. He then was transferred to the Naval Academy as an instructor in aviation. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946.
Howard returned to Western Electric in the Planning Dept in 1948. He returned to Pensacola that same year. Howard and his wife, Joyce, set up a business in tailoring and pressing in 1948, Rein's Tailor Shop, and he did the pressing. He bid on and received a contract for Eglin AFB BX tailor shop and had that contract for 20 years. He also kept a downtown store and started formal wear rentals in Pensacola in 1952. His daughter operated the business and he did the books. Howard started with New England Life Insurance in 1956. The firm was Box, Hulbert, Rein, and Associates, specializing in Pension plans, Estate planning and Financial planning.
Howard has an extensive resume of civic work that he was involved with, including: 1950 Jaycees – outstanding JC of Pensacola Award; Left Jaycees in 1955; In 1950, he was one of the reorganizers of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Band of Directors and Past President serving till 1970; United Fund 1961-1976 as an Honorary Board Member, receiving the 1 st Community Service Award in 1972; United Way Budget Chairman 1965; United Way Executive Committee 1966-1976; Community Council 1962-1965; United Way Agency Admissions and Review Committee Chairman 1967-1969; Community Planning Committee Chairman 1970-1977; Community Central Service Chairman 1972-1973; Helped start a pilot program on day care in the area; Innovation and Development Committee 1971-1973; USO 1965-1977 Past President and Treasurer; American Red Cross 1967-1978 Disaster Chairman for shelters and Vice Chairman for total Disaster Committee; Arthritis Foundation 1968-69; City Civil Service Board 1962-1972, then 1976 – 1977;
Pensacola Jr College Foundation Past President 1976; University of West Florida Foundation; Charter member Pensacola Lions Club; Pensacola Dinner Club Past President 1978 and 1979; Pensacola Association of Life Underwriter as a past board member; 1980 received the Bob Cain Award for service to the Insurance Industry; Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Scholarship Trust Chairman of the Awards Committee; Pensacola Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters (CLO); Past President Estate Planning Council of NW Florida; City Council past member; Metropolitan Planning Organization; Ad Hoc Committee on Employee Relations
Pension Board Representative; 32 years involvement in the Community as a leader; Community Equity Investment Inc board member and Finance Committee; First United Way Community Service Award Recipient; Chairman of the Public Enterprise Committee; Former Director and Past President of Pensacola United Way; Pension Board member for the Pensacola City Police Dept.; City Council Financial Committee; and Mayor Pro Tem.
He believed that if the community is good to you, then you give back to the community.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce P. Rein and sister, Mildred Respch.
Howard is survived by daughters, Karen (Glen) Hensley, Lynn (Carl) Wheelus and Gail (Craig) Kittleson; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Peg Hesel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Visitation will be held 10:00am-11:00am, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.
