Obituary

Hubert was born in Kinard, FL on June 23, 1932. He was dearly loved by many. His outgoing personality was enjoyed by all who met him.

He served in the U.S. Army as an Amphibious Vehicle Driver. During that time he was stationed in Bikini Atoll and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Hubert was hard working throughout his life. He began his lifelong career at Delchamps grocery chain in 1949. As a teenager, he worked as a sales clerk, over time earning his way up to the position of store manager over at various Pensacola locations until retirement.

He was an active member of Olive Baptist Church and the Vaughn Urquhart Sunday School Class. He served in various ministries including: a mission trip, welcoming churchgoers as an Olive Baptist door greeter and the Lighthouse Ministry. The Lighthouse Ministry is an outreach program to individuals residing in nursing facilities or who are unable to attend church.

He was a devoted husband, loving dad and granddaddy, loyal son and brother and a lifelong friend to many. He found joy in helping others, took pride in his family, home and work, and he loved the company of old and new friends. He was a gardener and loved to golf. He was an avid lover of westerns, his favorite being John Wayne.

After an optimistic and fervent fight with cancer, he passed away peacefully at Broadview Assisted Living Facility on May 8, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Although this is a time of sadness at the physical loss of a wonderful friend and loved one, it is also a time of celebration at the transition he made into heaven, where he experienced the meeting of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, along with the joyful reunion with his wife, his parents and siblings, and many friends and family he had been longing to see again. Let us find comfort in the truth that he is made whole and pain free, at that we can see him again according to the scriptures found in John 3:16. He will be dearly missed.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Willie Vern Gross; his parents, Alma Padgett and Talmadge Mosley; sister, Lillian; brothers, Willard and Paul, and son-in-law, George Fisher.

He is survived by his children: Jimmie (Louise) Wright of Birmingham, AL; Clarisse Dittenhoefer of Birmingham, AL; John (Theresa) Steadham of Pensacola, FL; Renee Fisher of Hickory, NC; grandchildren: Jay (Emily), Anna Bartlett and Leigh Wright; Heather (Phillip) Scott, Brooklyn and Branson Holt; Christa Simms and Stephanie Minton, and Lang, Burch (Lyndsay), Forbes (Sara), Zoe and Corille Fisher; great grandchildren: Anne Charlotte, BreighAnna and Brent; Jaxson, Bryce and Rylan and special friend, Helon Hawke.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the funeral service begins at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with Reverend Jon DuBois officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Kurt Ackenhausen, Brent Alford, Howey McNeill, Royce Mosley, Stevie Mosley, Phillip Scott and Jay Wright.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lighthouse Ministry at Olive Baptist Church, 1836 East Olive Road, Pensacola, FL 32514.

Special thanks to Emerald Coast Hospice, especially Sophia Falzone, Broadview Assisted Living staff, Cherry Savage and the countless friends who loved him.
