With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Captain Hugh Rankin, US Navy (Ret.), who passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 66 years old.

Born on February 22, 1960, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, Hugh was the son of Charles Rankin and Kay Rankin. Growing up on his family's ranch, he developed a strong work ethic, an adventurous spirit, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors - qualities that would define him throughout his life.

In 1978, Hugh began what would become an extraordinary 38½-year career in the United States Navy. Starting as an enlisted Sailor, he rose through the ranks to become a Captain (O-6), a testament to his unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Along the way, he earned a Master of Aeronautical Science with Distinction and held numerous leadership positions throughout the United States and overseas. His career took him across the globe, serving in the Philippines, Japan, Hawaii, Nevada, California, Tennessee, Maryland, and Florida, where he earned the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him. Those who knew Hugh best described him as one of the hardest-working, most generous leaders they had ever encountered. He led with humility, integrity, and genuine care for the people entrusted to him. Throughout his career, he believed that leadership meant making life better for those who served under him, and he never accepted "good enough" as the standard. His legacy of service touched countless lives and left an enduring mark on the United States Navy.

While stationed in the Philippines, Hugh met the love of his life, Doni. Their chance meeting blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted 43 years. Together they built a life filled with love, faith, laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. Their journey took them around the world, creating lifelong friendships and memories wherever the Navy called them.

Outside of his military career, Hugh embraced every opportunity to enjoy life. He loved fishing, scuba diving in some of the world's most beautiful waters, and riding his motorcycle to discover new places to relax and unwind. Even after losing his vision in 2019, he continued to face life with courage and determination, supported by his faithful guide dog, Belle. He also treasured time spent with friends, especially attending concerts, with Santana being the last performance he enjoyed.

Above all else, Hugh was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His kindness, quiet strength, infectious sense of humor, and unwavering faith left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Hugh is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Doni Rankin; his mother, Kay Rankin; his sister, Alicia Van Rankin; and his brothers, Colin Rankin and John Rankin. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Rankin.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Hugh's remarkable life with a Visitation from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 pm on Thursday August 13, 2026, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32504. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 am Friday August 14, 2026, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1212 E. Moreno St., Pensacola, FL 32503, with Father Santo as the Celebrant. A cortege will follow to Barrancas National Cemetery for the graveside committal. Please join the family afterwards at 2:00 pm in the Ave Maria Hall at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. 

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor in memory of Hugh Rankin.

Fair winds and following seas, Captain. Your service, your love, and your legacy will continue to inspire all who knew you. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing your watch is complete, and your memory will live on forever.
