IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hung Thanh
Nguyen, Sr.
May 1, 1937 – November 9, 2024
Hung Thanh Nguyen, Sr., 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Pensacola, FL on Saturday, November 9, 2024.
He was born in Da Nang, Vietnam on May 1, 1937, to Nguyen Giam and Nguyen Thi Gia. Since he was a medic in the army, he had to flee his homeland with his wife, young kids and two sisters due to the Vietnam War. It was a harrowing journey, first on a local fishing boat and then transferring to a much larger merchant ship. His wife, Giao, was 9 months pregnant during this time and safely delivered their daughter at the Naval Hospital in Guam. Through the generosity of several Catholic families from St. Paul Catholic Church, Hung's family was sponsored to come live in Pensacola, FL. Although Hung did not speak the language of his new homeland, he worked hard at every profession he tried. Hung and Giao raised their 6 children with 3 guiding principles: to love God, to value education, and to work hard every day to contribute to the betterment of our country.
Hung's favorite things were to work in his backyard garden and to spend time with all his grandchildren. The joy on Hung's face was clear when sitting cross-legged on the floor playing cards with all the kids. He loved it when all the grandkids would camp out in his living room, and he would watch them eat breakfast.
Hung is survived by his wife of 62 years, Giao Huynh; his sister, Xuan Nguyen; his sons, Hung, Cuong and Quoc; his daughters, Thuy, Van and Lan; his daughters-in-law Angela and Nguyen; his sons-in-law, Ali and Steven; and his 10 grandchildren.
