Obituary

J.V. Simpkins, 85, of Pensacola, FL passed away Friday, January 20, 2017.

He was born on March 17, 1931 in Atlanta, GA. He attended Tech High School and had some college as well. At the age of 17, J.V. enlisted in the US Marine Corps as a Private. He served honorably for over 20 years and ultimately retired as a Captain. During his Marine career he served at stateside and overseas stations including Korea, Okinawa and Haiti and aboard several Navy amphibious ships. His primary duty was in payroll and disbursing. After retirement from the Marines he was employed for 10 years in Civil Service in Washington, D.C. as Deputy Assistant Director of HEW's Finance & Payroll Division. Following his work with Civil Service, he worked for over 20 years in the life insurance and annuities business.

J.V. has resided in Pensacola, FL since 1973. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, traveling, reading, listening to good music of all genres and had a fond love of Cocker Spaniels. He was a member of several social and civic organizations including the Elks Club, the North Pensacola Optimist Club, Past President of the Civil Airs Ballroom Dance Club and a member of the Guys & Dolls Dance Troupe from 1998-2005.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Barger and James Corbin Simpkins; as well as his adopted sister, Virginia Bennett.

Survivors include his loving wife, Martha J. Simpkins of Pensacola, FL; daughters, Cynthia Dennis of Atlanta, GA and Cathy Simpkins of Chiefland, FL; his sons, Richard Simpkins of Atlanta, GA and Brian Simpkins of Milton, FL; granddaughters, Kim Dennis of Dawsonville, GA, Stephanie Dennis of Atlanta, GA and Dana Simpkins of Pensacola, FL.

Memorial Service will be held 2:00pm Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Azalea Trace Auditorium, 10100 Hillview Dr., Pensacola, FL 32514 with Chaplain Jim Dietz officiating. Private Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, FL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 1501 N. "Q" St., Pensacola, FL 32505; or to the Azalea Trace Heritage Foundation, 10100 Hillview Dr., Pensacola, FL 32514 or to Covenant Care, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of WillowBrooke Court at Azalea Trace, many of whom cared for J.V. Simpkins with professionalism, compassion and love in the last years of his life.
