Obituary

Jack Cobb, 84, died Thursday, August 11, 2011, of complications after cancer surgery. Jack was born in Opp, AL, on November 11, 1926. He lived in central Florida and Mobile, AL, prior to moving to Pensacola in 1943. He graduated from Pensacola High School in 1945 and went directly into the U.S. Army Air Force. He entered Florida State University as one of the first students on the G. I. bill in 1947 which was the first year that FSU became a university. He held many jobs in his life including working at the post office, National Airlines, Ordons Mens store, and for nine years at the Naval Air Station as an aircraft electrician; however, he is best known for his years as a real estate broker specializing in acreage and home sites. His work in this field began in 1959 when he joined his father-in-law, Joe L. Burgess, in his real estate business. In 1962, upon Mr. Burgess sudden death, Jack took over the Joe L. Burgess Agency. He waited almost two decades to put his own name on the letterhead saying that he owed at least that much to his father-in-law for setting his new career in motion. He continued his work as a realtor for the rest of his life and was still in possession of his real estate license at the time of his death. He was the exclusive broker for the St. Regis Land Development Corporation (Champion Paper) and sold the subdivisions that are known as Pine Forest Hills, Pine Forest Estates, Woodbine Hills and Woodbine Estates. His favorite thing to do was cruise the area for undeveloped land and often remarked how much he loved the real estate business. In the early 1970s, he was president of the Pensacola Board of Realtors, realtor of the year, and district nine vice president of the Florida Board of Realtors. Jack was a 32nd degree Mason who held active membership in the Scottish Rite. Though his world revolved around real estate, his other interests were European cars, antique guns, and taking unusual photos of animals, people, and architecture. His main hobby, however, was to analyze news articles for incorrect grammar usage and plays on words. He also enjoyed learning new words and incorporating them into his vocabulary. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Susan Cobb. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Madalyn Burgess Cobb; his son, Burgess Cobb, of Pensacola; his daughters, Jeanna Cunningham (Oliver) and Claire Springfield, of Atlanta, GA; his brother, William H. Cobb, Jr. (Helen), of Pensacola; his sister, Suzanne Cobb of Atlanta; his nieces, Kristal Walsh and Carol Manson; and two great nephews, Cole and Luke Flanders, all of Pace, FL. He also had eight grand cats and one grand dog. Our family wishes to thank the caring staff at Sacred Heart Hospital and especially the Sacred Heart Palliative Care and Covenant Hospice teams. Our deepest gratitude goes to Dr. Amos Prevatt for his 50 years of dedicated care to Jack and his family especially in Jacks final days. Visitation will be held 1:30pm until the Memorial Service to begin at 2:00pm Tuesday, August 16, 2011at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. There will be a private family burial at Bayview Memorial Park. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Sacred Heart Foundation, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
