Captain James Ellis Baker, Jr., 86, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Thursday, May, 19, 2016.
Captain James Ellis Baker, Jr. was born June 3, 1929 in old Sacred Heart Hospital to Minnie May Oliver Baker and Captain James Ellis Baker.
A native of Pensacola, FL and a lifelong member of Christ Church. He graduated from Pensacola High School and then graduated from the Naval Academy in 1951. He served in destroyer, cruiser, mine warfare and amphibious forces and commanded the minesweeper NIGHTINGALE and the destroyer ROWAN. His other assignments were to NATO staff in Europe, three times to combat zones in Asia and several times in the Pentagon. After 29 years of service with distinction, he retired to his home in Arlington, VA. He was best known for his sense of humor and being the life of the party. Jim was exceedingly witty, intelligent, steadfast friend, "good company" for the numerous people who enjoyed his hospitality, generosity and kindness. He loved gardening in his free time, as well as spending time with his friends at the Crystal City Sports Pub. He later moved to Pensacola to take care of his sister, Connie, until her death. He was the devoted uncle of Lillianne Godfrey.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Captain James E. Baker and mother, Wilhelmina Baker and sister, Colonel Constance Baker Godfrey.
He is survived by his niece, Lillianne Godfrey of Pensacola, FL and his half brothers, Marvin P. and Tony Baker.
A memorial service will be held, at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Christ Church, followed by a reception in the Parrish Hall. A private military burial will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society.
