Obituary
Dr. James Walton Carruth, Jr. 76, passed away late Friday night July 8, 2016 at Baptist Hospital. Dr. Carruth was born on October 31, 1939 in Wilmington, NC. He grew up in Red Springs, NC, attended Davidson College '60 and Duke Medical School. He came to Pensacola July 5, 1965 as a Flight Surgeon. He married Elizabeth Ann Click Dec 1, 1967. After her death he married Sarah Click.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah; a daughter, Polly C. Patton (Cody) of Atlanta, GA; a son, Jim (Alice) Carruth of Pensacola, a son, Gus (Amy) Carruth of Lexington, KY; a sister, Elizabeth C. Wall (Larry) of Boone NC; 2 nephews, Jim & Lance Lancaster of NC and a sister-in-law, Tessie C. Williams of Pensacola. He has six grandchildren; Owen (11) and Adelaide (6) Patton, JW (13) and Corbin (4) Carruth, and John-Thomas (2) and William (3 1/2mos.) Carruth.
Dr. Carruth practiced Ophthalmology in Pensacola for 33 years. He was President of the Medical Staff at Baptist in 1983, President of the Escambia County Medical Society in 1987. He served on the Board of Baptist Hospital and various committees. He was a Knight in the Fiesta in 1976, a member of the Order of Tristan and Rebellaires. Dr. Carruth was a member of the Five Flags Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
The Funeral Mass will be 10:00am Thursday, July 14, 2016 at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Hyde Park Rd. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery. The Visitation will be Wednesday, July 13, 2016 starting with the Rosary at 5:00pm and continuing until 7:00pm at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel on Airport Road.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pensacola Catholic High, American Lung Association of the Southeast, or your favorite charity.
