Obituary

James "Jim" Osborne was the son of Augustine and Mary Elizabeth Osborne. He was born on June 26, 1920 in Worcester, MA, the eldest of three children. His younger sisters were Margaret (Osborne) Kane, deceased and Mary R. Osborne, deceased.

Jim grew up a Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins fan attending his first Sox game in Fenway Park at age 8 in 1928. The Sox were playing the Yankees with Babe Ruth in the lineup.

Jim graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in June 1942, 6 months after Pearl Harbor, as an English and Latin scholar. He immediately went into the U.S. Navy and then the Pacific Theatre. He spent the entire war in the Pacific participating in many battles.

LTJG Osborne was the navigator on the USS Jerauld, an APA vessel, and in April, 1945 the USS Jerauld landed scores of Marines on the beaches in the Battle of Okinawa. Jim eventually rose to the level of Commander in the USN before retiring in 1965.

Following the war Jim received his Masters Degree and thereafter the Navy called him back using his language skills to edit Navy training materials and textbooks. In 1974, Jim's editorial division was moved from the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. to Pensacola, FL, explaining how this New Englander ended up in Pensacola--a place he dearly loved and where he choose to live out his life, post retirement.

In 1947 Jim married Lucille Dion, his loving shipmate, who preceded him in death, Feb. 2013. Anchored by their Catholic faith, civic commitment and family devotion, Jim and Lou shared 63 years of love and life.

They had 7 children, Joan Monroe of CO, Anne (Paul) Mucinskas of MA, James (Maureen) Osborne of MD, Marie "Dee-Dee" Osborne of FL, Paul (Diane) Osborne of VA, Patrick (Lee Anne) Osborne of MD and Martin "Duke" Osborne of MD, in addition to 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
