James B. "Jim" Pennewell, Sr. died Thursday, June 20, 2019 surrounded by family at Covenant Hospice at West Florida Hospital and Medical Center in Pensacola following a brief illness. He was a resident at Summer Vista Assisted Living.
Jim was born August 16, 1931 in Berlin, Maryland to Harry and Sadie Pennewell. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and served in Japan during the Korean War. After his war service, Jim was stationed in Washington, DC, Hawaii, and England before retiring in 1972 at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Following his retirement he worked as a civil servant onboard Pensacola Naval Air Station at the Naval Aviation Rework Facility where his duties included locating helicopter components nationwide to rebuild Navy helicopters. He attended the University of Maryland where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason in the Masonic lodge.
Jim had numerous hobbies over the years, including building and flying model airplanes and later, RV camping. He excelled at solving the Rubix Cube. He was very mechanical from a young age and could fix just about anything that was broken around the house. He had a keen sense of humor and a sharp intellect. Jim often worked multiple jobs to support his family of seven. He was a devoted brother and a loving husband and father.
He is survived by son James B. Pennewell, Jr., daughter, Nina Pennewell and sons Dean Pennewell and Scott Pennewell, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Drucilla and son, Ron Pennewell.
A funeral cortege will depart at 10:00am sharp Friday, August 23, 2019 from Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL. The committal service will follow at 10:30am at Barrancas National Cemetery (Shelter B), where he will join his cherished wife, Drucilla.
