James "Jim" Barton Shepherd, 88, passed away Friday, November 2, 2018. In the weeks before his death he was comforted and cared for by many, including both daughters and his favorite grand-dog, Bella.
Jim was born in Philadelphia, PA, raised in Wayne, PA, and was the son of the late Richard and Florence Regester Shepherd. He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. After his service as a cryptographer in Germany, he attended Penn State, where he received a bachelor's degree in business administration. He worked as an accountant with Arthur Anderson in New York City and with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, which brought him and his young family to Pensacola in 1968. In the 1970's he earned an MBA from the University of South Alabama and taught at Pensacola State College as a Professor of Accounting and Economics through his retirement in the late 90's. He was active with the Teacher's Union, a former member of First Presbyterian Church, contributed to the creation of the Memorial Garden at Trinity Presbyterian Church, and was a founding member of Northminster Presbyterian Church.
He is preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Carol Holbrook Shepherd; brothers, Robert and Richard Shepherd; sister, Barbara Fallows; and his identical twin brother, John Alan Shepherd.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth "Betsy" Anne Shepherd of Pensacola, FL and Laura Elaine Shepherd (John Plummer) of Mercer Island, WA; nieces and nephews, Joan Pederson of IN, Margot Klawitter of WA, Sandra Shepherd of SC, David Shepherd of MS, Rob Shepherd of PA, Scott Shepherd of IL, Jayne Shepherd of VA, and Barabeth Fallows of British Columbia.
Visitation will be held at 12 noon followed by a brief memorial service at 1:00 pm Friday, November 16, 2018 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Reverend Frank Beall will be officiating.

Jim's daughters would like to express their deepest appreciation to those who contributed to his care and showed love and support to him and his immediate family, especially in recent years. This includes but is not limited to the staff, nurses, and aides at Azalea Trace, his doctors, friends, neighbors, church, extended family, and so many others, both near and far. Special thanks to Covenant Hospice and caregivers, Janice Meyermann and Marta Andrews.
