IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jan Richardson
Hopkins
September 8, 1931 – January 3, 2021
Jan Richardson Hopkins, 89, of Pensacola died on Sunday, January 3, 2021 from injuries sustained in a fall on Christmas day.
Born on September 8, 1932 in Mobile, AL, Jan moved to Pensacola with her family in 1947. She graduated from Pensacola High School and attended Auburn University, where she was a member of Chi Omega women's fraternity. On October 20, 1951 she married E.W. Hopkins while he was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The couple moved to San Clemente, CA for E.W. to serve at Camp Pendleton. They returned to Pensacola in 1953.
In her early years in Pensacola, Jan was employed as a designer for Bayshore Builders. She, E.W. and their three daughters enjoyed time spent together at Belle Grove Stables, where they raised and rode horses and ponies. Jan showed her Tennessee Walking Horse, Jet's Farewell, for several years and treasured the family's annual visits to the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville. She valued every opportunity to travel, her most memorable trip being the family's voyage to England on the QE2 in 1975.
Jan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who loved to care for and serve others. Her heart and her home were always open for entertaining and celebrating. A woman of abiding faith, she was a founding member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Pensacola where she served on the Altar Guild and in the Episcopal Church Women ministry for decades. Her other community involvement included membership in the Lazy Daisy Garden Club and the 21 Investment Club.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents, Cullen Gayle Richardson and Pansy Eugenia Smallwood Richardson; her brother, William Cullen Richardson and her eldest daughter, Dinah Hopkins Mencum.
She is survived by her husband, Elbert Wesley Hopkins of Pensacola; daughters, Sarah Hopkins Perkins of Pensacola and Kate Hopkins Stradtman (Leighton) of Atlanta; grandsons, William Wesley Ricketts of Bellingham, WA, and George Leighton Stradtman, Jr. and Cullen McCormac Stradtman, both of Atlanta; as well as a beloved extended family.
A private graveside burial will be held at Bayview Memorial Park and a celebration of her life will be held at St. Christopher's later in the year. Memorials may be sent to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 3200 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola FL 32503.
