Obituary

Janet Patanjo, 94, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

Lovingly called Jannette by her late husband, Joseph "Chubby" Patanjo. Janet was born to the late Serafina and Michael Romeo in Brooklyn, NY on March 31,1929. Janet also met her future husband, Chubby, there at the tender age of 15 in 1944. They were married in October of 1949 and soon after moved to East Patchogue, NY. There Janet made a home for her husband and eventual four children as a loving wife and mother until 1987 when they relocated to Pensacola, FL as empty nesters.

Janet's true passion and gift in life was caring for people. She received true joy in serving others. Whether you lived in her house, visited her home or invited her to your home, she was never idle and would usually be found in the kitchen preparing delicious meals (Sundays and holidays were always over the top!), providing or helping out in other ways as well as engaging in friendly conversation. One of her favorite conversation topics was classic movies and movie stars. Being a huge fan, she always had the answer to all the movie trivia game questions and offered it freely whether she was on your team or not. In her early years before she married, she worked in New York City for a newspaper placing classified and fashion design ads. A bit later she worked for Women's Wear Daily (a fashion industry trade journal) placing ads. She also worked for a time at Bianchi's Greenhouses on Long Island and the YMCA after-school youth programs. After relocating to Pensacola, she continued to work with children in after-school programs at one of the local elementary schools. She was a woman of many hidden and obvious talents with a genuine passion to serve others.

Janet is survived by her four children and their spouses: son, Dan Patanjo (Lina Crigler) of Pensacola, FL; daughter, Stephanie Barshov (Ken) of Pensacola, FL; son, Joseph Patanjo (Donna) of Kissimmee, FL; daughter, Ellen Conway (Bob) of Winter Garden, FL; as well as seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her dear and faithful nephew and wife, Joseph Canero (Karen) of Milton, FL.
