She was born in Pensacola, FL on December 9, 1946 to Juanita Stanton Livingston and James Edward Livingston. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her uncle, John T. Stanton, Jr.
Janis is survived by her husband, Lt. Robert D. Giese, Supply Corps, United States Navy (ret'd); former husband, Jerry L. Martin, CPO, United States Navy (ret'd); daughter, Amy (Matthew) Fossa; granddaughters, Sarah and Katie Raines and Emma Fossa; former son-in-law, Michael W. Raines and aunts, Doris (James) Trout and Joan Stanton; numerous cousins and close friends, including Ms. Velda Vanessa Spead, Ms. Cynthia Tappan, Dr. Kathy Stuart and many others.
Janis graduated from Pensacola High School in 1964. She was a lifelong musician, starting to play the violin at the age of 7. She graduated from Florida State University in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and spent her career performing with many orchestras including the Virginia Symphony and the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra; the latter of which she was a member for over 50 years. She organized youth orchestras, taught students privately, was on the faculty of Pensacola Junior College and taught music at Berryhill Elementary School for many years.
Janis had a tremendous sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with her friends. She was an exceptional cook as anyone lucky enough to sit at her table was blessed to learn. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She loved spending time with her granddaughters, who would frequently visit and eat ice cream with her. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Janis has been an animal lover all her life and has had many beloved pets with whom she is now, no doubt, having joyful reunions!
