Jennie Losh Merritt, age 74, went to her heavenly home on Friday, June 10, 2022.
Jennie was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1947. She moved to Pensacola in 1953 and graduated Pensacola High School in 1965. She went on to earn a master's degree in engineering from the University of Southern California.
Jennie served as an officer in the United States Military, retiring as Chief of Personnel for First Air Force in 1994. Among her awards were the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Jennie was a parishioner of the First Presbyterian Church of Pensacola and the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Gulf Breeze and served as regent of the Choctawhatchee Bay Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution from 2008 to 2010. She and was known nationally for her exquisite embroidery work, a skill she learned from her grandmother. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, an avid sailor, backpacker, and amateur astronomer. In this last avocation, during a grazing lunar occultation she was the sole collector of data points that revealed the presence of a then unknown mountain near the north pole of the Moon and is on record as the discoverer.
Jennie was preceded in death by her mother Lydia Jean Wilkinson Clancy and her stepfather Charles Leonard Clancy. She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Jerry Merritt.
A graveside service to honor Jennie Losh Merritt's' life will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Bayview Memorial Park, with Reverend Kenneth Griffin, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the US Air Force. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 9:30 am to go to the cemetery together in police procession .
