Jim Miller died October 5, 2021, in Pensacola, FL. He was born on May 5, 1927 in Havana, FL. His parents were Mabel Shelfer Miller and Andrew Lamar Miller. Jim was married to Barbara Dolores Brandon Miller on September 19, 1952, in Pensacola. He grew up in Havana and attended local schools there. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville for two years between 1944 and 1947 separated by almost one year in the Navy's V-5 program in St. Mary's College, Winona, MN, and Iowa State College in Ames, IA. In the summer of 1947 the Florida State legislature made both University of Florida and Florida State College for Women coeducational. Jim then enrolled at the new Florida State University in Tallahassee in September of 1947. He graduated with an AB degree in Journalism in June 1949.
After spending time in commercial radio during college and after graduation in Leesburg, FL, Jim re-entered the Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet in Pensacola and began what was to become a 30-year career in naval aviation. He achieved the rank of Commander along with his coveted Navy Wings of Gold.
Survivors are his wife, Dolores; daughters, Kathi Miller Wright (Lee) of Molino and Ellen Burgess (Jim) of Sarasota, FL. He also leaves four grandsons and eight great grandchildren, James (Jimmy) Burgess (Ciel) whose son is James of Dubai, Ryan Daigle (Teresa) whose children are Nathan, Evan, Jason, and Lillian of Atlanta, GA, Stephen Daigle (Christina) who children are Asher and Anniston of Ocean Springs, MS, and John Burgess (Kasey) whose daughter is Esmé of Tampa, FL.
Jim spent many years as a volunteer for Florida State University. Some of his accomplishments were six years each as a member of the Board of Directors of both the National Seminole Boosters and the Florida State University Alumni Association. He was awarded membership in the coveted Circle of Gold and the Alumni Commitment to Excellence. For many years Jim served the National Seminole Boosters as Area Chairman and District Chief. He also helped organize and develop the local chapter of the Greater Pensacola Seminole Boosters (now the Greater Pensacola Seminole Club) serving several years as its President. He was known throughout Pensacola and the entire Seminole nation as "The Ole Nole"!
Jim was an ardent and dedicated family man as well as a very proud Naval Aviator and Florida State Seminole. But he was most thrilled whenever he heard one of his younger family members call out "Grandpa"!
