Obituary

James Burton "Jim" Murphy, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

Jim was born December 8, 1928, at Lay Dam, AL, to the late James William Murphy and the late Rita Arant Murphy. Jim moved from Lay Dam to Mobile with his family in 1940. After graduating from Murphy High School in Mobile in 1947, Jim attended Auburn University, where he met a beautiful co-ed named Sarah McKee. The couple were married in 1951 after Jim graduated with a degree in electrical engineering.

Jim then entered the US Army completing his three-year enlistment and receiving an honorable discharge in 1954 as a Second Lieutenant. Soon thereafter, Jim began his career as an electronic engineer, where he worked as a civilian employee for the United States Defense Department designing radar and electronic defense systems until he retired in 1987. Jim also served in the US Army Reserves, retiring as a full Colonel in 1988.

Jim was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity at Auburn. His faith was a vital part of Jim's life. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and later joined St. Ann Parish where he regularly served as a greeter to welcome parishioners to Sunday Mass. He enjoyed playing golf, achieving a seven-handicap following his retirement, and volunteering at Baptist Hospital and Andrews Institute.

Jim and Sarah were married for 57 years until her death in 2008. They had two sons, Jim, Jr. (Jane), and Paul (Christina); five grandchildren, Caroline (Robbie), Courtney, Matthew, Caitlyn (Jake), and Lindsey, who all survive him. Jim was thrilled to welcome a great-grandchild, Finley Jane, into the world in 2021. Jim is also survived by his brother, Robert W. Murphy and preceded in death by another brother, William A. Murphy.

Known affectionately by his grandchildren as 'Pops', Jim was always kind, encouraging, and generous to everyone. His enthusiasm in all his pursuits and his zest for life will make him missed by all who knew him.
