Jimmie “Doc” Irby, a veteran of the US Navy and longtime resident of Milton, FL, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, surrounded by family.

Jimmie was born August 14, 1936, in Albany, KY. At 20 years old, Jimmie enlisted in the US Navy and would serve for over 22 years before retiring as Petty Officer First Class. During his military career, Jimmie trained to be a Field Medical Service Technician, or combat corpsmen, providing direct tactical healthcare and emergency trauma treatment alongside US Marine Corps units in combat. His service during Vietnam earned him multiple awards of valor, heroic conduct and exceptional merit, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

After his retirement from the Navy, Jimmie would go on to have a career in horticulture at Geroge Stone and medic safety representative on the oil rigs at McDermott. Jimmie always maintained the prettiest yard in the neighborhood, as well as mowing the yards of many neighbors. Though his allegiance with the Kentucky Wildcats will always be priority, Jimmie was a 20-year member of the Florida State University Boosters Club and football season ticket holder. The highlight of his tenure was sharing a hotel with the FSU team for many years, wherein he snuck players chocolate chip cookies and whatever other goodies he could snag for them. His favorite vacation spot was Gatlinburg, TN where he knew many bartenders by name and single handedly kept Knife Works in business for many years. Jimmie lived life to the fullest and made many memories with friends and family alike through his 90 years on Earth. He will be greatly missed by anyone that had the pleasure to meet him.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Minnie (Duvall) Irby; in-laws, Leo and Eula Maher; brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Irene Irby; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Betty Irby; as well as a nephew, Frankie Irby.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Irby; children, Jimmie (Daphne) Irby, Angie (Jason) Wright, and Michael (Kari) Irby; grandchildren, Brandon, Jessica, Kate, Cameron, Connor, Daniel, Savanna and Matt; as well as 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 2:00pm until a funeral service to honor Jimmie's life begins at 3:00pm Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Interment will be held at 9:00am Friday, August 21, 2026, at Barrancas National Cemetery, with full military honors. For those wishing to attend the interment, please line up by 8:15am Friday, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel for a police escorted procession to Barrancas National Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jimmie Irby, Michael Irby, Brandon Mauer, Cameron Irby, Connor Irby, and Daniel Irby.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local Humane Society.
