Captain Joel Lowell Sr., USMC (ret.), 82, died peacefully on Thursday, July 12, 2018.
Captain Lowell was a veteran of the Vietnam War and honorably served 20 years in the US Marine Corps. He was born August 22, 1935 in Montezuma, GA. He was the son of Curtis and Helen Miller. He grew up in Pensacola with his mother and stepfather Raymond Lowell. He was a graduate of Pensacola High School, and in 1953 he eagerly joined the Marines and attended basic training in Paris Island, SC. He attended Ben Franklin University, was commissioned in 1962 and retired in 1974. Upon retirement he returned to and settled in Pensacola, FL. He was active in the community coaching youth baseball, volunteering, serving as PTA president at St. John's Catholic School, and announced high school football games at Pensacola Catholic High. He was a long-time member of Krewe of Lafitte. He was the Mardi Gras King Apollo for Krewe of Aphrodite and played Tarzan in the Court of Fiesta Frolickers. He was selected as USO Volunteer of the Year and was recognized with a beautification plaque on Jernigan Road for his efforts to keep the community clean. He regularly attended services at Nativity of our Lord Catholic Church. Captain Lowell was a brave and loyal Marine as well as a loving husband and dedicated father.
He is preceded in death by his son, Joel Jr.
Survivors include his loving wife, Louise West Lowell; children, Debra, Tracy and Brad; stepsons, Michael and Jamie; as well as 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 11:30am until the Funeral Service at 12:30pm Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full Marine Honors.
The family wants to extend a special thanks to the physicians and hospital staff for the care they provided to Captain Lowell.
