IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Rodgers
Camp, Iii
December 18, 1969 – December 21, 2023
John Rodgers Camp, III, 54, of Pensacola, FL passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL.
John was born December 18, 1969, in Miami, FL. He was the beloved son of Barbara Hoffmann Camp and John Rodgers Camp, Jr. and beloved brother of Laura Nelson Camp. John grew up in Miami Shores and attended Cushman School and Miami Country Day School where he made life-long friends. He loved sports and lettered in nearly all of them. He enjoyed the water and life at the beach, going to Miami Hurricane and Dolphins' football games, traveling, and listening to all styles of music. Summers were spent at the family home in the mountains of Cashiers, NC. During those fun summers, John spent his days at the lake, teaching tennis and leading hikes at High Hampton Inn. He also served as an acolyte at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
John attended and played football at Presbyterian College then transferred to the University of Alabama (Roll Tide). John joined Sigma Chi Fraternity (as his dad did) and cherished being a Sigma Chi brother his entire life. John followed in his dad's footsteps of service to others and love of adventure and explored several careers and interests including military service and travel. He returned to South Florida and worked at an advertising agency (where he was thrilled to even work on some commercials with boyhood idol, Dan Marino).
It was on a business trip to Pensacola that his life was changed. During one of his meetings, he met an account executive named Tina Marie Wild who he immediately fell in love with. Having met the love of his life, John moved to Pensacola and began a new career path as a civil engineer where he excelled, thrived, and was brought much fulfillment.
John and Tina married at the Church of the Good Shepherd on May 17, 1997, (the same church where his parents were married) with his dad as his Best Man. For the next decade, John and Tina embraced life "on the road" moving from project to project. John loved a challenge, and those challenges offered the opportunity to work on complicated bridge projects like his first one in Pensacola (Bayou Chico), Virginia (Smart Road), Georgia, Iowa, Missouri, Washington DC (Woodrow Wilson), and Fort Lauderdale (airport exchange). Through the years they adopted several rescue dogs who brought much happiness to their lives. They loved adventure and embraced this phase of their journey together.
They returned to Tina's hometown of Pensacola for the birth of their adored son, Benjamin Weston Camp. John loved being a husband and father - family was everything to him. John phased out his engineering career with Hurricane Katrina relief projects in Louisiana before switching career paths to stay close to his family. His next phase included owning a variety of popular restaurants (Guthrie's Chicken and Shux Oyster Bar) and volunteering (Team Rubricon). He also pursued his lifelong love of music as he created a record label, signing promising local musicians and serving on review boards. John was a Renaissance man who enjoyed challenges and learning new things.
John inherited his dad's sense of integrity, work ethic, love of country and family, generosity of spirit, intellect and "old school" values. He also inherited his mom's creative and artistic side, love of movies, and ability to entertain and tell stories (or as he would say "pontificate"). He loved sharing stories with his trademark smile and twinkle in his blue eyes.
John always wanted to help others. He never turned down someone in need. He was a strong supporter of the military and first responders and a proud American. He loved being on the water, teaching Benjamin life skills, grilling, watching movies, listening to music, entertaining, and most of all, he loved his family.
John passed away unexpectedly after a fall at home and subsequent brain bleed. He is survived by his wife Tina; son, Benjamin; and sister, Laura.
John was a beloved husband, father, brother, son-in-law, mentor, and friend. Though at peace, he will be greatly missed.
The family held a private service at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Pensacola, FL.
