Obituary

John William "Jack" Casey, Jr. was born January 7, 1923, in New York City, to John W. "Pat" and Rose V. Casey. He died on August 10, 2017 at the VA hospice at Lake City, FL.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Nancy Barksdale, Maureen Fisher and Mona Whitmore.

He is survived by a sister, Patricia Riehm and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Jack grew up in Miami spending his time on the adjacent waters and in the Everglades. He attended Gesu High School where he was chosen All State in Basketball and was Miami City Junior Tennis champion. He graduated in 1942.

He served in the army in WWII as a member of the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion. He received the Purple Heart and his unit received a Presidential Citation for the battle of Anzio. He was a prisoner of war at Stalagluft 7A, Mooseburg, Germany. After the war, he attended the University of Miami on the GI Bill, competed on the swim team and graduated in 1950.

Jack was a commercial fisherman and salvage diver. He always had at least one boat since his teens. He loved the sea and was very knowledgeable about animals in and about it. A devoted son, beloved brother and uncle, a loyal friend, he will be missed.

Visitation will be held 10:00am until a Funeral Mass to begin at 10:30am Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1212 E. Moreno St., Pensacola, with Msgr. Michael Reed celebrant. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
