John Stewart Hines, 80, of Pensacola passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Sacred Heart Hospital. John was born March 10, 1931 in Chicago, IL where he spent his early years. He served in the Merchant Marines in 1947 and 1948, then joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, and spent much of his military time providing services to aircraft on US Aircraft Carriers USS Boxer (CV-21) and USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), including a blimp squadron assignment at Weeksville Naval Air Station, the last purely lighter-than-air facility. He retired a decorated veteran after 20 years as AMH1 from NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL. John was also stationed at NAS Millington, NAS Pensacola, NAS Whidbey Island, and NAS Sanford, before retiring from the military to Pensacola in 1969. Post-military retirement was followed by 15 years employment at Air Products & Chemicals in Pace, FL, and several years at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, cooking, visiting local casinos and spending time with his family and friends. His father, mother, and brother preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vera Hines; three children, John A. Hines (Beth) of Chicago, Jim Hines and Joe Hines (Amy) of Pensacola; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Harper Morris Memorial Chapel, Tuesday November 15, 2011 from 5:30-6:30pm with Funeral Services beginning at 6:30pm, officiated by Father Doug Halsema. Funeral Cortege will depart Harper-Morris at 11:00am Wednesday, November 16, 2011for a Graveside Service at 11:45am at Barrancas National Cemetery, officiated by Deacon Richard Lurton. Full military honors will be observed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Childrens Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
