IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Elvis
Morgan
November 10, 1930 – May 9, 2016
John Elvis Morgan, 85, of Montgomery, AL, died Monday, May 9, 2016.
Mr. Morgan was born on November 10, 1935 in Molino, FL, the sixth generation of Morgans to live in Escambia County, FL. He graduated from in the first class of men at Florida State University in 1952 with a masters in elementary
education.
He taught in and was principal of public elementary schools in Escambia County for 15 years before becoming Assistant Registrar at what was then Pensacola Junior College. He retired in 1983 and became the church chef at First Presbyterian Church, Pensacola. He was affectionately called John "Angel Buns" Morgan for the homemade biscuits he would make for church meals. He and the other Montreat Cooks – volunteers who chopped, diced, mixed and served – made thousands of meals, catered receptions, and cooked for the youth of First Pres on their annual trip to the Montreat Youth Conference.
In addition to cooking, John served as an elder and on many committees of First Presbyterian Church since joining in the late 1950s. He then followed his daughter Nan to whatever church she was serving at the time – Navarre and Trinity Presbyterian churches – before moving to Montgomery and becoming active in both Immanuel and Memorial Presbyterian churches.
He was one of the early members of Members First Credit Union and served on its elected board of directors for 49 consecutive years. Members First's newest building in Pensacola is named in his honor. He was a lover of opera, chair of the beer and wine tents at the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival for 10 years, First Pres Christmas decorator for 10 years, a RIF volunteer distributing free books in elementary schools, an avid Atlanta Braves and FSU football fan, and a firm believer in that goodness could be found in everyone. He got immense pleasure for voting for Hillary in person in the AL primary.
His family was his world; those both in the present and the past have always been a constant source of strength in his life – and a rich source of endless stories to pass on.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Archie O. and Helen Baumeister Morgan; his wife of 52 years, Elise Humphrey Morgan; a sister Beverly M. Morrison; a brother-in-law, Robert L. (Jane) Eaton and two nephews, Paul Morrison and John Eaton.
Survivors include daughters, Nan M. Adams and Martha B. (Kim) Morgan of Montgomery, AL; brother-in-law, Bob Morrison of Monroeville, AL; niece, Suzanne Morrison (Jimmy) Davis of Monroeville, AL; nephew, Tom (Susan) Eaton and niece, Becky E. (Randy) Amos of Tallahassee, FL; granddaughter, Morgan Adams (Greg) Tredo of Daytona Beach, FL; honorary daughters, Kathy Klauss of Montgomery, AL, and Allison Donaghy Hawthorne of Williamsburg, VA and numerous grand- and great grand- nieces and nephews.
