Obituary

John David Phillips, 62 years of age, passed away unexpectedly on July 1, 2015. He was a longtime resident of Pensacola before moving to his beloved Josephine, Alabama. He was a graduate of Pensacola High School, where he played in the band as a drummer. He then played with the Rosie O'Gradys Dixieland Band at Seville Quarter for several years. He teamed up with his lifelong friends, George Emmanuel and Tommy Ratchford, to form the George Emmanuel Trio. They were quite successful and played for many functions locally and around the Gulf Coast. John loved all kinds of music and was an extremely talented drummer. John was also in the lighting and construction industry before his illness with kidney disease and recurring complications kept him from continuing to work. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was able to keep it during his illness. He loved playing the drums, sailing, scuba diving and just being on the water. John is preceded in death by his father, George W. Phillips, Jr. and his mother, Alyne Borras Phillips. He is survived by his loving wife and childhood sweetheart of 43 years, Fayolyn Wilson Phillips; his brother, George (Bubba) Phillips (Meriwyn) of Inverness, FL and his sister, Sheila Phillips Smith of Pensacola. The family would like to thank those who cared for John during his struggle with his illness. Our dear friend, John Born, who carried John when he was too weak to help himself, his home health care nurse, Leslie, his dialysis nurses and Doctor Humeda. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm Monday, July 13, 2015 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. We will celebrate the life of a wonderful man, a terrific musician and loving husband. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the National Kidney Foundation in John's name. They were instrumental in John's treatments.
